With New Year’s celebrations just around the corner, punters will be wondering where they can purchase last minute drink and food ahead of tonight’s parties.
Many chains will be running into the evening today, with several closing their doors tomorrow as the new year arrives.
Typically, most supermarket stores close their doors on New Year’s Day in a bid to allow their staff to relax following one of the busiest times of the year.
But in recent years retailers have begun to change their opening hours, with some varying from store to store.
If you are unsure if your local shop will be open, it is advised you check their opening hours as they aren’t always the same across all branches.

Last-minute Aldi shoppers have until 6pm on New Year’s Eve to get their final goods together.
Every one of Aldi’s over 1000 UK stores will then be shut on New Year’s Day, according to the retailer.
Although this should be the same across all Aldi stores, you should check your local branch’s timings.
Supermarket chain Asda will be operating under reduced hours on New Year’s Eve

British supermarket giant Asda will open at reduced hours for New Years Eve and New Years Day this year.
In the run up to 2025 – on December 31 – stores will be open from 7am until 7pm.
On New Year’s Day stores will open there doors from 9am until 6pm, however times will vary between branches.
Therefore, shoppers have been urged to check their local stores opening hours using the Store Locator tool on Asda’s website.

Aldi rival discount retailer Lidl’s opening hours will vary across branches, with shoppers advised to check local store times first.
All stores will be shut on the New Year’s Day in a bid to give staff a break during the very busy Christmas period.
However branches dotted across the country will resume normal opening hours on January 2.
On December 31, 400 of their branches will be open to customers from 9am until 7pm, however customers are advised to check their local branch times
Marks and Spencer:
Marks and Spencer’s will open for a shorter period on New Year’s Eve and will be entirely shut on the first day of the year.

A spokesperson from the retailer said the stores will be closed on January 1 so ‘colleagues can spend more time with loved ones’.

Elsewhere in Scotland, branches will be open from 6am on New Year’s Eve, and will operate from 9am until 6pm the following day.

Sainsbury’s is set to be open during the New Year’s Eve period but will be running open for fewer hours.
New Year’s Eve will see supermarkets open from 10am until 7pm whilst smaller stores will be open from 6am until 9pm.
On the first day of 2025, opening hours for supermarkets and convenience stores will be from 8am until 8pm and 8am to 9pm respectively.
Sainsbury petrol stations will be open half an hour longer than the supermarket in the morning and afternoon on New Year’s Day.
The chain’s 2,300 nationwide stores will resume normal trading hours on January 2.

On December 31, Tesco Extras and superstores open 5am to 7pm, with local stores open from 6am to 10pm.
The following day superstores open 8am to 6pm, Express stores providing service to the public between 8am and 10pm.
