Moving to a foreign country is a large undertaking, but with thorough preparation, it can prove the adventure of a lifetime.
More and more expats are expressing interest in moving to Montenegro to enjoy a lower cost of living and a relaxed pace of life.
The southern European country also happens to be the seventh country in the world with the largest number of UNESCO areas per square meter.
This network of natural wonders includes vast mountain ranges, glacial lakes and sweeping forests, to name a few.

“This beautiful country on the Adriatic Sea offers breathtaking scenery, an affordable lifestyle and favourable tax policies,” explained real estate agent and expat Peter, on the YouTube channel Wandering Investor.
“Montenegro has an advantage in that it has lots of things to do in a very small space,” said the expat. “It’s very dynamically kind of different.
“Although it’s risen a lot recently because of inflation, I would say that the cost of living is still low for Europe.”
Ladislas Maurice, an experienced traveller and relocation expert, added: “Affordability is definitely a big pro of moving to Montenegro. It’s not just a cheap destination. You can live cheap if you want but you can also live a life of luxury if you choose to. So Montenegro is a fit for a lot of different types of people.”
According to Immigrant Invest, income earned by individuals is taxed at a progressive scale of nine to 15 per cent.
“The first 700 euros of monthly salary is non-taxable, and the first 8,400 euros of self-employment annual income,” according to the website. “The company’s income is also charged on a scale of nine to 15 per cent.”
Montenegro was recently included in a list of the top destinations to move to in 2024, compiled by relocation expert the Wealth Expat.
The breakdown was based on the best residency programmes across the continent, which put Serbia and Montenegro at the top.
In a YouTube clip, the Wealthy Expat shared several factors that, in his opinion, put the two countries among the top destinations to move to in 2024.
“Montenegro is very similar to Serbia, very traditional,” the YouTuber pointed out. “It still preserves that traditional culture.”

“It’s a country that has amazing beaches and mountains. The nature is incredible. If you get residence in Serbia, you can get easy access to Montenegro, it’s a one-hour flight.
“You can also buy property in Montenegro and get residency, there are many different projects.
“I love the luxury, I love the nature, I love the views. You can easily get residency in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.”
