Eamonn Holmes has praised the Princess of Wales for her “generosity” after she bought a round of drinks for troops during her St Patrick’s Day visit to the Irish Guards.

Princess Kate joined the Irish Guards on Sunday to celebrate St Patrick’s Day and mark the regiment’s 125th anniversary.

After the medal ceremony, the royal joined the soldiers for refreshments and made a touching gesture by buying a round of drinks for the troops.

The Princess of Wales enjoyed a half pint of Guinness as she chatted and joked with the soldiers.

Speaking about the moment on GB News, Eamonn said: “Catherine joined the soldiers for a drink, and she, this reflects very well on her, she put some money behind the bar. As well as drinking some of the profits as well.”

Co-host Nana Akua said: “It is funny, just thinking about her putting money behind the bar like that. I didn’t know they carried cash.”

“I think it’s really good. People who are generous like that and who would do things like that for others. I just think it’s really nice.

“There are those who run a mile when it comes to paying for a round of drinks.

“Of course, if you’re in company with people, then they disappear and go to the loo. It never ceases to amaze me.

“I can always tell who’s not going to pay, who disappears whenever I put money behind the bar. I think that’s excellent.”

When thanked for putting money behind the bar for the guardsmen, the Princess replied: “It’s the least I can do.”

The traditional St Patrick’s Day drink complemented the festive atmosphere of the regiment’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

The Princess was dressed in a bottle-green coat and percher hat for the occasion, maintaining the traditional Irish colour theme.

Before the parade, Princess Kate presented operational medals to soldiers who had recently returned from deployment in Iraq.

Kate was forced to miss last year’s parade after undergoing treatment for major abdominal surgery.

In February 2023, she wrote to the regiment apologising for her absence as she continued her recovery.
