Drivers commuting to work are dealing with congestion chaos on the M25 as traffic officers deal with a serious HGV fire.

The M25 in Surrey is closed clockwise between J5 Sevenoaks and J6 Godstone/Caterham as traffic officers deal with the recovery effort.

Traffic is also stopped on the anti-clockwise carriageway between J6 and J5, which has also seen closed the M26 westbound between J2A and M25/A21.

Emergency services including Surrey Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue are at the scene, while National Highways Traffic Officers and contractors remain in attendance assisting with traffic management.

The recovery effort on the M25 continues

In the latest update posted on X, National Highways: South-East said lanes two of four remain closed on the anti-clockwise carriageway.

All traffic caught within the closure has since been released, although four miles of congestion remains on all approaches on the M25 and anti-clockwise at J6.

A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said six crews attended the scene, in addition to officers from Surrey Police.

Shortly before 7am, the spokesperson said one fire engine was still at the scene. They added: “The crew are currently dampening down hot spots.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all staff and partners who were involved in tackling this blaze.”
