A ‘do not eat’ order has been issued for a popular cereal after it was urgently recalled for the health hazard it posed.

A dangerous ingredient has been found in certain batches of the sugary breakfast food, beloved by children across the country.

Buyers of Nestlé’s Frosted Shreddies should watch out for hard pieces of sugar in their purchase as 12 hazardous batches containing the ingredient have been identified.

The worry is that the lumps of sweetener could cause families who eat the popular food item nationwide to choke.

The Food Standards Agency said yesterday: ‘Cereal Partners UK and Ireland are recalling Nestle Frosted Shreddies because they may contain small hard lumps of sugar which have formed in the product.

‘This makes the product unsafe to eat and may present a choking hazard.’

Both large 500g boxes of the sweetened wheat cereal and the smaller 40g containers could be affected by the dangerous batch.

Concerned customers are advised to check the top of their boxes for specific serial codes, listed, and send a picture of it to Nestlé to get their money back if their purchase turns out to contain some of the dangerous batch.

The affected 40g containers were sold as part of 210g packs of Nestlé Box Bowl Mixed Cereals, a multipack of mini boxes of beloved cereals from the brand.

The Food Standards Agency advised anyone who has bought affected products: ‘Do not eat them.’

Customers should instead return them to the store they were bought from or they can contact Nestlé directly with the photo of their batch code to get a refund.

Nestlé’s recall notice said: ‘We take the quality and safety of our products very seriously.

‘As a precautionary measure, Cereal Partners UK and Ireland has inititated a voluntary recall of Nestlé Frosted Shreddies.’

It emphasised: ‘No other batches of Nestlé Frosted Shreddies, Nestlé Shreddies varieties or other Nestlé Breakfast Cereal products are affected.’

It added: ‘Safety and quality is our first priority and we apologise for the inconvenience caused.’

Customers can contact Nestlé, with their pictures of their affected batch code, via the contact form on its website or via phone on 0080007890789 to receive a refund.
