Disney and Pirates of The Caribbean fans have threatened to boycott an upcoming movie in the franchise after they heard rumors that frontman Johnny Depp was going to be replaced.
Depp has been a staple within the Disney films portraying the clumsy, thieving yet brilliant Captain Jack Sparrow alongside his partner Will Turner, who was played by Orlando Bloom.
It has been seven years since the last edition, Pirates of The Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, was released with continuing suggestions there will be another film to add to the classics.
Many fans have been championing for Depp to return to the films after his fallout from his court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard – a trial in which he was successful.
However, beloved fans of Depp and the movies have claimed they will refuse to watch the movie if he is replaced in the role of Captain Jack.
There have been suggestions that The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri is being considered by Disney to become the lead role in the films, with many expressing their dismay at the speculation.
Johnny Depp played the loveable character for over 15 years
One avid movie fan wrote on X: “Ayo Edebiri, the woman Disney is considering to replace Johnny Depp in the next Pirates of The Caribbean movie. Identifies as a queer and is an extremist socialist who hates capitalism.”
Many fans of the films rejected the idea that she would be a good replacement for Depp, as one user bluntly replied: “It ain’t Depp I ain’t watching.”
“I really don’t care who or what she is if it’s not Johnny Depp it’s not pirates of the Caribbean,” a second added, before a third noted: “I’m not watching if Depp ain’t there.”
An adamant fourth viewer quipped: “I’m not watching if it ain’t Jack Sparrow, sorry Johnny Depp.”
Johnny Depp has become a staple within the films
Some were quick to come to the defence of Edebiri, as one user noted how Depp has already claimed he would not return to work with Disney again.
They said: “It would be the only reason to tune in, the franchise is dead.
“She’s a fine young actress, No one can truly replace Depp but let’s face it, I ain’t watching another one if Depp was reprising his role. I’ll check it out if she’s in it.” (sic)
Despite many fans of the movie series being adamant they will not watch the film, there has been no official confirmation from Disney that a new movie will go ahead.
Fans are adamant they won’t watch the film without the iconic character
Depp played the lead role for over 15 years, but his official representative recently shut down claims he was approached with a deal to return, telling NBC News: “This is made up.”
The reports came from an industry insider who claimed Disney were keen to patch up their relationship with Depp and said: “They reached out to the actor prior to his defamation trial against Amber Heard and asked whether he would be interested in returning for another pirate film or two.
“What I can tell you is that the studio has already penned up a draft for a film about Jack Sparrow so they are very hopeful that Johnny will forgive them and return as his iconic character.”
