During menopause, many women struggle to overcome the physical changes that go hand in hand with low oestrogen levels.

According to the Mayo Clinic, this leads some to notice an increase in belly fat as they get older, even if they don’t gain weight.

“This is likely due to a lower level of oestrogen because oestrogen seems to have an effect on where fat is located in the body,” explains the health body.

As oestrogen levels naturally decline during this period, dietary choices become significantly more important.

Women who want to avoid exacerbating changes in body composition may need to start by cutting out problematic food groups, according to one dietitian.

The main dietary culprits, according to Trista Best, from the Candida Diet, are processed foods and refined carbohydrates.

The expert cautioned: “Processed foods and refined carbohydrates are linked to an increase in insulin resistance and hot flashes.

“This category of foods are not ideal for one’s health, but especially women in menopause.”

On the other hand, research suggests that increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids could provide relief from common menopausal symptoms.

Not only does these nutrients reduce the frequency of hot flashes and night sweats but may also reduce waist circumference.

“Foods rich in this essential fatty acid include fatty fish and chia seeds,” noted Trista.

With bone health being another crucial concern during menopause, women may want to consider upping their intake of vitamin D and vitamin K.

While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss, many successful slimmers report luck making changes to their diet.

Among them is Billie Steele who achieved her dream physique at the age of 52.

Billie’s breakthrough came with the crucial realisation about weight loss fundamentals; that a calorie deficit is non-negotiable.

“A calorie deficit is essential for fat loss, no amount of crunches will get rid of your belly,” she shared in a TikTok clip.
