Britons may need to reach for thicker moisturisers in the winter months as the skin can naturally dry out.

As well as picking the right products, experts shared why you should not neglect your hands and neck if hoping to create a more youthful appearance.

Founder of Sphagnum De-Lux Lisa Kavanagh said: “It’s vitally important for everyone to moisturise on a daily basis and always to include areas such as hands and neck.

“Neglecting to moisturise hands and neck can lead to a gradual breakdown of collagen and elastin, which will cause them to rapidly age in appearance.

An expert shared the importance of moisturising your neck

GETTY

“It’s crucial for moisturising products to be infused with SPF to protect the skin from UV rays, even as we head into the colder months of the year.

“Don’t be surprised if you notice unwanted lines and wrinkles if this process isn’t followed through.”

The expert shared five tips for applying moisturiser that can help you get the most out of your products and turn back the clock on your appearance.

Use twice a day

They said: “The best way to treat ageing and dry skin is to moisturise twice a day – both in the morning and at night. The morning use will keep the skin hydrated, whilst applying at night will aid in regeneration.”

Use SPF-infused products

“Daily protection from UV rays is extremely important to protect the skin from frequent sun exposure. Even in autumn and winter, exposure to UV rays can cause ageing skin.”

Always include hands and neck

“Whilst many moisturise their face, many forget to look after their neck and hands which can be common indicators of a person’s age.”

Use a thicker moisturiser in winter

“A thicker moisturiser will be needed in winter to avoid dry skin caused by the cold air and indoor heating. It’ll also greatly help to prevent flakiness and ageing skin.”
