The average bargain hunter spends two hours and 18 minutes-a-week looking for the best deals.

A poll of 2,000 adults found shopping in supermarkets (two hours 16 minutes), searching for holidays (two hours 14 minutes) and when buying new clothes (two hours 13 minutes) are the things people dedicate the most time to finding good deals.

More than 90 minutes is spent trawling through charity shops – but a quarter do not often shop around for a great deal on their car insurance.

It also emerged 31 per cent use the feeling of being a savvy saver to help motivate them to cut back on their spending.

The research was commissioned by Compare the Market, which is entering a new era with their service, AutoSergei, delivering personalised car insurance deals that could save people time and money ahead of their renewal.

To mark the moment, AutoSergei has been popping up in unexpected places across the country, including the Bullring in Birmingham, and Leake Street Arches near Waterloo.

Guy Anker, director at Compare The Market, said: ‘With people facing expensive household bills, shopping around is more essential than ever.

‘We know people’s lives are busy and it can be difficult to find the time or feel confident in making a financial change.

‘But taking one small step in comparing prices and utilising tools that helps make this easier for you might not only help to keep your budget in check but also set a positive example for others, proving that a little effort can go a long way.’

The research also found that while more people want to save money (58 per cent) than time (four per cent), 34 per cent say these are equal in importance.

But 22 per cent admit they have an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude towards their finances.

Adults view price comparison websites as the best place to find a good deal (52 per cent), compared to speaking to family members (25 per cent) or on social media (25 per cent).

And while the primary goal for searching for a bargain is to save cash (78 per cent), more than a quarter (26 per cent) also like ‘the thrill of the hunt’.

Mr Anker added: ‘Our research shows two-thirds of people are open to having a variety of personalised insurance deals delivered straight to them.

‘While price is important, you should also check you are choosing the right product for you.

‘AutoSergei helps make searching for the right deal on your car insurance renewal easier than ever, helping to ensure you spot the savings that might be out there.’
