Many people know that skin care products can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

What is less well known, however, is how a healthy gut can impact how young your skin looks.

The gut can affect many aspects of health, including skin inflammation and even the appearance of wrinkles.

This is according to clinical nutritionist Suzie Sawyer, who told GB News: “It’s that time of year when skin tends to be drier. Worse still, we look in the mirror and wonder how we can turn the clock back on our appearance and banish those pesky wrinkles.

“The answer lies in our gut health. Essentially, gut health affects our total psychological and physical wellbeing, mainly because of the complicated communication system known as the gut brain axis, which also influences the gut microbiome.”

The expert, who is also an advisor to PrecisionBiotics® – the brains behind a range of scientifically-proven probiotic supplements – added many people are unaware of the link between the gut and skin.

She said a healthy gut leads to “improved, wrinkle-free appearance from the inside out”.

Suzie added: “Real-world data commissioned by PrecisionBiotics® found that 96 per cent of Brits think that gut health impacts their quality of life, with 63 per cent believing stress can aggravate the gut.

“Indeed, 40 per cent of Britons feel stressed, which will not only impact sleep but how we look too, with skin health and our appearance also being adversely affected.

“The gut brain axis affects overall digestive health, which is controlled by the gut microbiome, the trillions of live bacteria, known as probiotics, that reside in the gut.

“When this is out of whack, an inflammatory response can be triggered which not only exacerbates skin conditions such as acne, but will damage integrity and appearance of the skin, and encourage wrinkles. In essence, our microbiome can help us to turn back the clock on how we look and feel.”

A healthy, varied diet high in fibre and fruits and vegetables and fibre can both contribute to a healthy gut and ultimately benefit the skin.

The expert continued: “Ensuring regular bowel movements, relieving the body of toxins, is critical to achieving healthy, glowing and youthful skin. According to the same research data, only two in five adults enjoy regular and pain-free bowel movements.

“Constipation triggers a myriad of health issues, but is also reflected in the skin, in energy levels, our stress response, and much more besides, including uncomfortable bloating.

“Whilst eating fermented foods and those containing loads of colour variety help nourish that all important life inside, it’s super important to get your gut health on track and face-up to an anti-ageing strategy.

“A key priority is to take a well-studied probiotic supplement with a specific strain scientifically proven to help bust stress and improve sleep – vital for good skin health needs.”

There are many helpful supplements on the market that can give good results, according to the expert, such as PrecisionBiotics’ Zenflore Daily Mental Wellness Supplement which contains the heavily researched Bifidobacterium longum strain 1714.
