Road users are being offered the chance to collect bonus Nectar points every time they charge their electric vehicles thanks to a new scheme.

Thanks to a new partnership between Allstar, one of the UK’s leading EV, fuel and business expense payment companies, and Sainsbury’s, electric car owners will be able to benefit.

When using the supermarket’s Smart Charge EV infrastructure, users of the Allstar Chargepass will be able to collect Nectar points with each charge.

A further offer, which runs until Friday, October 25, will see 10 times the amount of Nectar points given for first time users of the service.

Sainsbury’s operates 58 electric vehicle charging hubs at stores around the country, with drivers now able to benefit from Nectar points when recharging.

Research from the supermarket commissioned earlier this year found that 80 per cent of drivers have avoided long journeys because they do not want to charge at public chargers.

They have described the main frustrations as chargers being broken (40 per cent), not enough charging bays (36 per cent) and the speed of service (33 per cent).

Data from Allstar found that customers using public EV chargers was up staggering 264 per cent compared to the same period 12 months ago.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s director of property, procurement and EV ventures, said: “The new partnership between Smart Charge and Allstar represents a fantastic new milestone for our EV charging business.

“From today, Allstar customers have access to our 24/7, convenient and reliable ultra-rapid charging hubs.

“Customers can make use of Sainsbury’s services such as cafes during their short wait, with the added personal reward of earning Nectar points while they charge.”

He described the partnership as being a “critical step” in their ambition to make EV charging simple and accessible to all British drivers.

Fleet drivers will benefit from the new measures, using over 475 bays across more than 58 locations across the country.

Sainsbury’s Smart Charge network makes use of ultra-rapid 150kw chargers which have the capability to charge vehicles to 80 per cent in less than 30 minutes.

Paul Holland, managing director for UK/ANZ Fleet at Corpay, including UK brand, Allstar, also praised the partnership to help make charging accessible for EV drivers.

He said: “Our focus is to provide the best payment solution for our customers, whether that’s fuel, EV charging on the road or at home.
