A major crash has forced the closure of Queensland’s Bruce Highway just south of Bowen after a fiery collision early this morning.

Emergency services rushed to the scene near Bowen Airport after reports of a two-vehicle crash just before 6am.

Two people were taken to Bowen Hospital with abdominal and pelvic injuries. Both are in a stable condition.

Queensland Fire Department said the crash left one of the cars on fire but this was brought under control by 6.20am.

Roads have been closed in both directions with alternative routes for those travelling northbound via Drays Road and Bootooloo Road.

But the detours are only available for smaller vehicles. Large trucks and semi-trailer drivers have been told to wait until the road is cleared.
