Borussia Dortmund have reportedly held a ‘secret meeting’ with a former Manchester United boss over the German club’s current managerial vacancy.

According to Sky Sports, Dortmund held talks with Ralf Rangnick on Monday in Salzburg to convince him to take temporary charge until the end of this season.

However, Rangnick is still under contract as coach of the Austrian national team until December 2025.

Sky added that Rangnick is leaning towards turning down Dortmund’s offer owing to his current role in international management.

However, he is said to be viewed as one the leading contenders for the role, along with former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac.

Dortmund reportedly spoke to the Croatian last Friday, although he was also rumoured to be uninterested in assuming the role on a temporary basis.

Their search for a new manager comes after the decision to sack Nuri Sahin – with the club sitting tenth in the Bundesliga and 20 points off pace-setters Bayern Munich.

In addition to reports from Sky over the possible appointment of Rangnick, The Athletic added that ‘Ralf Rangnick to Dortmund on an interim basis will not be happening this season’.

The publication’s German football correspondent Seb Stafford-Bloor added that it was ‘not an offer [or] rejection situation, just not a possibility’ for Dortmund to be able to bring in Rangnick as their new manager.

While reports indicate that Rangnick is not keen on assuming the role, he previously took temporary charge of Manchester United in the 2021-22 campaign after the Red Devils sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, after an inconsistent run of form that saw United finish in sixth place with their worst points total in Premier League history, Rangnick became Austria’s manager.

He was successfully able to guide the team to qualification for Euro 2024, where they would finish top of an imposing group that included France, the Netherlands and Poland.

Unfortunately for Rangnick and his men, they were eliminated in the last-16 after a 2-1 defeat to Turkey.

Dortmund appear to have been priced out of a move for Man United forward Marcus Rashford

The German side’s search for a new manager comes after they appear to have been priced out of a move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

The England star’s agents have held talks with several clubs since he was dropped by Ruben Amorim and the German side were among them, as reported by Mail Sport.

But Rashford’s £350,000-a-week wages are thought to have ruled them out, even for a short-term deal.

Dortmund are also interested in Brentford’s Kevin Schade, but he would cost £45million.
