BBC Celebrity Mastermind viewers have been left fuming after host Clive Myrie, 60, added a new segment to the show that tried their patience.

In 2021, Myrie replaced John Humphries after the former host retired following 18 years at the helm of the flagship quiz programmes.

While being questioned, the comedian gesticulated dramatically to the other contestants sat off screen, squirmed in his seat, screeched and waved his arms in the air.

Appalled viewers took to social media to share their disgust with his antics.

However, fans were first irritated by Myrie’s new approach to introducing the show.

“Hello and welcome to Celebrity Mastermind with me, Clive Myrie,” the host welcomed before launching into a huge opening monologue.

“They’re words that strike fear in the hearts of any celeb. You’re not on the list, you’re not coming in,” he began.

“But do you think any of our four contenders tonight have heard those words uttered in their presence? Absolutely not! Look at them. You’d want them in your gaff too! Oozing star power.”

As he spoke, the cameras cut to the rather bemused looking contestants.

At several points, it seemed like Myrie was drawing the monologue to a close before launching into more.

“All I want to know is how well they can handle one and a half minutes of specialist subject questions and two minutes on general knowledge in aid of their favourite charities and to win this magnificent trophy,” he said.

The monologue finally drew to a close one minute and 40 seconds later.

Fans quickly reacted to the speech, branding it “indulgent and overlong”.
