An Australian woman has claimed she was overcharged by hundreds of dollars for a greeting card when she momentarily got distracted at the counter of a newsagent.

The Sydney woman took to social media on Friday to say she felt ‘traumatised’ after the shop put through the incorrect charge.

She purchased the card valued at $6.99 and was charged $596.69 when she put it through on her card.

‘The amount charged to my credit card is not even close to the greeting card price. It’s very hard for that to be an error,’ she said.

She claimed as she was ‘distracted’ typing in her pin, the attendant typed something into the register themselves.

‘The shop did not turn the eftpos machine for me to witness the price being charged.’

She said once she noticed the massive charge on the receipt, she immediately pointed out it was incorrect to the attendant but they ‘refused to help’.

Ma Amys shared a picture of the $7 card she had wanted to buy from the newsagent

She claimed she was ‘in the shop for 20 minutes asking for a refund’ but the attendant and another worker ‘aggressively’ yelled at her and spoke over the top of her.

‘I had to then call my boyfriend to come to the shop as I felt attacked. We were then in the shop for a further 25 minutes asking for a refund.’

Ms Amys eventually called the police who attended the shop.

‘The owners came up with every excuse as to why they couldn’t refund me – they didn’t know how, it wasn’t working, they didn’t have cash and they refused to go to an ATM to get cash out.

‘Finally, they agreed to refund, but not the full amount [there was] a card surcharge of $10, which would be far less if the correct price of $6.99 was used.’

To top it all off, said the business then refused to give the greeting card to her.

‘I left the shop having been charged nearly $600, having to argue for my money back, paying $10 for a card fee, no greeting card and no apology.

‘I typically wouldn’t make a complaint unless I genuinely felt other people may be impacted.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the business for comment.

NSW Police said they had no record of the incident and that it was likely a civil matter.
