Auburn head football coach Hugh Freeze has revealed he has been diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer.

Freeze is 55 and shared the heartbreaking diagnosis on Friday in a statement.

The only silver lining is that Freeze’s cancer diagnosis was caught early and it is curable.

Freeze is not expected to miss any time as Auburn’s head football coach while undergoing cancer treatments.

Freeze is 55 years old and will be entering his third season at Auburn’s helm this fall.

‘Recently, Coach Freeze was diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer,’ an Auburn athletics statement read. ‘Thankfully, it was detected early and his doctors have advised that it is very treatable and curable.’

‘He will continue his normal coaching duties and responsibilities, and with forthcoming proper treatment, is expected to make a full recovery.’

‘Coach Freeze is incredibly appreciative of our medical professionals and has asked that we use his experience as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing and scheduling annual health screenings.’

Freeze is 11-14 as Auburn’s head football coach, a low mark for what has traditionally been an elite team from the Southeastern Conference.

Freeze is in rebuild mode after the tumultuous tenure of Bryan Harsin at the school, who took over for longtime head coach Gus Malzahn.

Auburn starts its 2025 season on the road against Baylor, with its SEC opener coming on September 20 against Oklahoma.
