Alan Shearer playfully taunted Tom Brady after Newcastle defeated Birmingham on Saturday.

Chris Davies’ side currently sit top of League One and were full of confidence as they welcomed Premier League opposition to St Andrew’s.

Ethan Laird fired the Blues into the lead within the opening minute but the Magpies responded with goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson.

Tomoki Iwata put Birmingham back on level terms before the interval before Newcastle found a winner courtesy of a controversial goal from Willock in the closing stages.

Speaking following the game Shearer questioned why Birmingham’s minority owner and NFL legend Brady had not been in attendance.

‘I can’t believe Tom Brady has chosen the Super Bowl over the FA Cup,’ Shearer said on the BBC.

The Blues’ minority owner missed the game with Super Bowl LIX in Louisiana on Sunday

‘It’s a bit rude isn’t it?’ He joked, ‘Especially to see one of the biggest clubs in the world as well.’

Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, invested in Birmingham in August 2023 and is still getting accustomed to football, having admitted he has ‘a lot to learn’.

Birmingham have huge ambitions and broke the League One spending record in the summer when they splashed £30m on signings – around 22 times more than the second biggest-spending club Peterborough, as per Transfermarkt.

Upon taking his 3.3 per cent stake in Birmingham, Brady said they are ‘an iconic club with so much history’ and that it was a ‘real honour’ to join them.

He added: ‘Birmingham City is built on teamwork and determination and I’m excited to work alongside the board, management and players to make our second city club second to none.

‘I’ve been part of some amazing teams in my day, and I’m looking forward to applying my perspective to create that same success here in Birmingham.’
