Attending a non-league football match is seen as a rite of passage for any British football fan.
It is perceived by many Britons as the best way to follow football thanks to the community feel of supporting one’s local team instead of backing a corporate-fuelled machine in the Premier League.
Keen to investigate how the atmosphere would differ to that of a top-flight contest – as well seeing what having a pint in view of the pitch was like – an American man living in the UK attended a non-league fixture for the first time and shone a light on the differences.
Social media personality K Jordy, who has nearly 250,000 followers on TikTok, attended a game between Hanwell Town and Tiverton Town.
It was a match which took place in the Southern Football League, which forms the seventh and eighth level of the English football pyramid.
Introducing the video, the content creator said: ‘So many of my friends have told me that I have not experienced football until I have watched [non-league]. Today I am on a side quest to watch Hanwell FC’.

The American transplant was also able to enjoy a pint in full view of the pitch in a marked difference to Premier League ties
‘I’ve seen the big matches, but now it’s time to experience local football.’
Before heading into the ground, he joked: ‘Today is the day I become a proper geezer’.
He made another humorous comment when quipping that he had ‘court-side seats’ for the match, adding that he also had to purchase a ‘cheeky pint’.
Upon encountering a group of young fans, the American asked them their favourite aspect of following a non-league team, to which they replied: ‘We live here, we’re born and bred, we love the team, we love the stadium and we love Hanwell’.
He was less enthused after trying what appeared to be a slice of fruitcake – but not without some hesitancy, as a fan said that it was an ‘acquired taste’
Seeming to agree, K Jordy gave the snack a ‘two out of ten’ rating.
However, he was far more complimentary when it came his overall experience of watching non-league football.
During his day at the ground, K Jordy enjoyed making acquaintances with hardy supporters
The vlogger also took the opportunity to try a local delicacy, which was put to him as ‘an acquired taste’
Giving a final verdict, he labelled it as a ‘ten out of ten experience’ and said he ‘will be going to another’ non-league match in the future
The match saw Tiverton Town draw first blood in the Non League Premier affair, but Hanwell levelled the score and the match ended 1-1.
K Jordy added: ‘Words can’t describe how much charm the stadium has. In these small towns you can tell it [means more] than a just a game of football [to members of the local community].
‘Great sportsmanship.’
