Ruben Amorim is trying to get sacked and Manchester United should grant him that wish, Richard Keys has argued in a blistering blog post.
The former Sky Sports presenter has torn into Amorim after the Portuguese branded his United stars ‘maybe the worst team in the club’s history’.
Amorim made the scathing admission on Sunday after watching in horror as his side slumped to a 3-1 beating by Brighton – their fourth defeat in five at Old Trafford.
And Keys thinks Amorim should be canned after betraying a lack of optimism and belief in the players at his disposal.
‘What the h*** was Ruben Amorim thinking when he said just that yesterday? Is he mad? Why would you do that? Isn’t he the man charged with making things better?’ Keys wrote on Monday.
‘I still can’t fathom what Amorim was trying to achieve. We know United are bad. That’s why you’re there Ruben. It’s your job to fix it – not tell us “I only have one way” and follow up by telling the world your players are s*** – the very same players you need to help you out of this mess.
Ruben Amorim wants to be sacked and Manchester United should do it, Richard Keys has said
Keys believes that Amorim showed too much pessimism in calling his Man United team ‘maybe the worst in the club’s history’
He thinks Sir Jim Ratcliffe should pull the trigger – and also blamed the billionaire for the team’s demise
‘I said a couple of weeks ago I thought he was trying to get the sack. I’m even more convinced now. If I was his boss I’d call him in this morning and give him his wish.
‘I saw the team that was (the worst). Tommy Doc inherited a mess when he was appointed manager at OT and went down with that team, but never once did he say what Amorim has.
He was always on the front foot. Always positive. And he rebuilt United in Busby’s image – with fast wingers, clever midfield players and ball playing centre-backs like Martin Buchan and Brian Greenhoff. What an era that was.
Surely that’s what Amorim should be doing? He should start a war. Deflect like Fergie would’ve done. Get players and fans alike onside. Give them hope.’
Hope is hard to come by for a Red Devils side who wither more each week. They sit 13th in the Premier League, 14 points off the top four. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, they never finished below third in the Premier League.
Amorim has beaten five teams in his 15 games since taking over from Erik ten Hag – Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzen, Everton, Manchester City, and Southampton.
In the same period he has suffered seven losses and they have now lost six of their opening 12 league games at home, their worst domestic start in 131 years.
‘We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,’ Amorim admitted on Sunday.
Jamie Carragher believes that Amorim was ‘ridiculous’ to speak of his etam so harshly in public
‘I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change it. Here you go: your headlines.
‘It’s unacceptable to lose so many games. For any Premier League club, so imagine Manchester United?
‘The opponents are better than us in many details. I am just here to help my players, but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records.
‘In 10 games in the Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is for a United fan. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.’
Amorim warned that worse may be on the horizon because he will not budge from his tactical plan, however dire it is going.
‘I knew it was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment, but when you lose games it becomes really hard,’ he added. ‘So that’s why I’m telling you we are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same. I am not going to change, no matter what.’
