She explained: “If your skin looks crusty, your makeup is going to be crusty.”
Next, the expert advised applying a hyaluronic “glowy” serum. The skin experts at Nivea stated: “Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluron or hyaluronan, helps skin retain moisture and serves as an anti-ageing agent ingredient in care products.
“It comes in either a long-chain or short-chain form, which has different effects. Building a face care routine using products with hyaluronic acid can effectively smooth fine lines and wrinkles.”
According to the experts, a skin care regime that includes hyaluronic acid has wide-reaching benefits.
Benefits of hyaluronic acid
- Moisturising
- Defines contours
- Plumps skin
- Adds radiance
- Smooths skin
- Firming
- Healing
- Antioxidant properties
After hyaluronic acid, women over 40 should reach for a good moisturiser to ensure their makeup glides on seamlessly.
Erica advised going for a “nice, hydrating, lightweight moisturiser that goes great with your makeup”. She added: “Not too thick – or it will stick.”

The expert advised going for something that includes vitamin C. The experts at Boots said: “Vitamin C boasts a long list of benefits, from brightening your complexion to evening your skin tone.
“It even helps diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – is there anything it can’t do? – which makes it the perfect ingredient to tend to the everyday maintenance of your skin.”
Once your skin is prepped and hydrated, you can start the process of applying your makeup.
Before introducing a new skin care product into your regime, it is always best to consult a dermatologist who can offer you tailored advice that caters to your skin type and specific concerns. It is also important to read a product’s instructions before using it to avoid irritation.
